BOOK REVIEW:
GEORGE EHUSANI’S ‘THE
POLITICS OF POPULATION CONTROL’
By Abel Simpa
On the 5th
day of March 2022, it was a great privilege for me to be at the ‘Book Festival’
organized by the Lux Terra Leadership Foundation in Abuja the Federal Capital
Territory of Nigeria. For all the right reasons, particularly with all the
precision and accuracy that characterized the unique event, the excitement that
encapsulated my entire being remains indubitable.
Building up with a little
customary law judicial principle which recognizes festivals as
ceremonies/events/occasions put together to reiterate, transmit and perpetuate
core values, it is impressive to realize that, a Festival, though not limited to, is intrinsically associated
with cultural and customary realities. Remember the captivating ‘New Yam
Festival’ account by Chinua Achebe in ‘Things Fall Apart’? Yes, so think of tubers
of books, if you’re like me and you like food…and love books. Okay, so wow! promoting
the culture of reading and writing necessitated the ‘Book Festival’ and the
unveiling of 7 books authored by Rev. Fr. George Omaku Ehusani the Executive
Director of Lux Terra Leadership Foundation, a man whose living room is
literally a functional library- no kidding.
Slowly, at the book festival, I picked up the
book: ‘The politics of population control’, held it close to my chest, moved it
up, gently to my right ear, communicated with the book in a language that only
those who are dramatic about books can understand, then boom! at that moment, I
knew I had found my next great read.
From the first chapter,
the author clearly identified the propaganda of “birth control or starvation”.
How that the manipulation and exaggeration of information to push the
philosophy of war against population has taken a dangerous dimension because
there is no full disclosure of what many of the ‘so-called’ contraceptives
actually do. George Ehusani resisted the deliberate breach of the right of
people to know and I will agree because from the perspective of law and
justice, credibility only comes with speaking/knowing: “the truth, the whole
truth and nothing but the truth”.
The second chapter
identified the myth in ‘overpopulation’. Here the author deliberately seeks to
free the reader from the imprisonment that ignorance constitutes and the
superstition, fear and error that leaves people defenseless. In the words of
the author; “The ability of a people to live comfortably depends more on the
accumulation of knowledge about techniques of production, the accretion of
physical and human capital, and the development of appropriate supportive
institutions, than on the number of people per square kilometer.”
In the third chapter,
George Ehusani while exposing the fallacy that seeks to pitch hunger and
starvation with population, explained, with facts, figures and comprehensive
illustrations, some of the real causes of Hunger in the world which are:
1. Greed, overconsumption and wastefulness
2.
Colonial Legacy
3.
The International Imperialism of Money
4.
Dysfunctional models of Development
5.
Lack of Adequate Infrastructure
6.
Urbanization
7.
The Arms Race
8.
Other Political factors
9.
Tradition.
On the Arms Race, author
clearly pointed out that when nations invest in more and more arms while people
starve to death, peace is directly being denigrated especially because of the
fact that only a little fraction of what is presently being expended on
armament by most nations is required to feed, house, cloth, educate and provide
employment for everyone.
It is really horrible
how leaders and nations focus on and spend so much money on weapons of
destruction whereas love and peace is what the world truly needs.
The last two chapters
revealed core truths about the interests, mischief and other negative
ideologies that are clandestinely perpetuated to hurt humanity. The author, in
vehement refusal to be deceived by the trending propaganda, passionately
celebrates the traditional African value placed on human life and the
scriptural dimensions of faith that supports the divine origin, supernatural
end and spirituality of human beings. Indeed, the need to sustain standards of morality with decency, discipline and integrity puts humanity on a more progressive pedestal.
To read this book is to
get positioned on an informed pedestal. It is clear that there is more
superiority and credibility here than out there where population control openly
advocates abortion along with sterilization and contraception. Oh my God! The
book opened my mind and the eyes of my understanding as I flipped through each
page. My high expectations were surpassed with every paragraph. The ease with
which every reader can understand the words used comes truly commendable. It is
a captivating social commentary. The clarity and effectiveness of the author’s
communication is such that leaves no stone unturned in the quest for meticulous
veracity. To every reader who needs to be satisfied with more knowledge and to
leaders who seek real solutions to local and/or global problems, I urge you to
get this book today!!!
